A bionic organization understand the significance of harnessing the power of both machines and people, says Ƶhdan Shikarov, senior manager of learning innovation and technology, BCG U, part of Boston Consulting Group.

WorkingNation sat down with Shikarov at the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego.

Shikarov says the often heard ‘robots are going to take your jobs’ is a common fear. “We are in an unheard-of new era which we haven’t seen before. It’s the disruption of white-collar jobs. Before it was mostly industrial processes and so on.”

“Now it’s automation of thinking with all these new AI and machine learning tools and data science evolution and so on.”

“What’s happening is that some of the jobs becoming obsolete were mechanical jobs, but mostly and new jobs are emerging. It’s not exactly decreasing number of jobs. It’s more like changing the nature of that.” Shikarov references an example of someone doing simple data analysis upskilling to become a junior data scientist.

He continues, “But an interesting piece around that is what our societies, organizations and governments can do about this.”

“For organizations to succeed in the next decade or so, they will basically have to compete on the rate at which they can learn. That essentially means you need to enable your workforce to upskill. We are not talking about upskilling programs so you provide everybody with some sort of path. No, it’s more like creating a culture. So lifelong learning becomes normal.”
