New unemployment claims for the week ending December 12 came in at 885,000, according to the Department of Labor. Higher than the expected figure of 818,000. Increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations around the country are taking a toll on economic activity.

WorkingNation is always looking at stories addressing how different parts of the country are trying to get unemployed people back into the workforce.

Here’s some of what we recently found.

From Alabama: Alabama NewsCenter reports formation of an alliance to support workforce development and job training initiatives in the state’s construction industry.

From Illinois: OakPark.com reports Triton College in River Grove is offering 13 free certification classes to local students.

From Maryland: The Baltimore Sun reports Guinness Brewery has donated $1 million to support job training and apprenticeship programs aimed at providing opportunity to Black communities.

From New Mexico: Area Development reports a company that is developing a mass accelerator that will launch satellites into space is expanding at New Mexico’s Spaceport America and is now set to hire an additional 59 workers.

From Ohio: WTOV reports a Ohio Senate committee is considering legislation that would recognize military veterans’ training and experience in their efforts to find jobs.

From South Dakota: KOTA reports certification programs are being offered at area technical colleges for no or little cost to residents who have lost their jobs during the pandemic.

From Virginia: Virginia Business reports a collaboration among three community colleges will provide job training resources – including shipbuilding and alternative energy – in 11 cities through 10 campus locations.

From Wisconsin: Milwaukee Biz Times reports grants have been awarded to boost diversity among the Milwaukee area’s health care workforce.
