The nonprofit sector is a significant employer in the U.S., according to Dennis Sawyers, chief human resources officer, American Society of Hematology.

WorkingNation sat down with Sawyers at SHRM 2022 Annual Conference & Expo in New Orleans.

“The nonprofit sector is the third largest employment sector in this country, employing more than a million people. Those data, alone, are telling you that this is a thriving employment area and the scope, the range of missions that are encompassed within the nonprofit sector is astronomical,” says Sawyers.

Sawyers explains, “The mission of ASH is to help hematologists cure blood diseases worldwide. For me, that is a great reason to get up and go to work every day.”

“We are doing some great work within our recruitment and retention program or initiative within the organization. We are working with universities across the country to identify opportunities for fellowships to bring people into classical hematology.”
