Paula Benjamin on seeing people succeed without taking the college route

A new campaign encourages employers to hire those Skilled Through Alternative Routes

Tearing the paper ceiling creates opportunity for STARs, people Skilled Through Alternative Routes by eliminating the need for a college degree. A new campaign from Opportunity@Work and the Ad Council encourages companies to consider this talent pool.

Paula Benjamin, trainee with NPower, says she joined the training program because she tried college and found it was not for her. In a four-month period with NPower, Benjamin will receive four tech certifications.

She says Tear the Paper Ceiling campaign reiterates she can have success without a four-year degree. “It is very important to me that I am represented, at all times. I love seeing people like me achieve great things because it just shows me that I can achieve those things, as well.”

Benjamin’s message to potential employers is she has strong tech skills, but also is energetic and has great people skills.
