Travis Fox on how a free software engineering program is transforming lives

The Marcy Lab School in Brooklyn describes itself as a one-year alternative to traditional college in which its students – mostly low-income – learn software engineering at no cost to them.

Travis Fox has worked at The Marcy Lab School for the past two years where he helped students make the transition from the classroom to the job market. He is being promoted to head of strategic partnerships on July 1.

WorkingNation sat down with Fox at Presented by JFF Horizons – See Beyond 2022 in New Orleans.

He explains that the students that attend the program are not interested in four-year schools, many times because they can’t afford them.

“We are looking to serve those students that are hungry to learn. They’re hungry to kick off a career. They’re ready to work hard, but they aren’t being adequately served by the four-year institutions that they’re looking at,” he explains.

“They come to us instead of going off for four years, going into $100,000 of debt. They can finish in a year and start earning $100,000 at the end of that equation.”
