With around 250,000 service members approaching the end of their military careers every year, they will have to make long-term decisions that will affect theirs and their families’ lives.
Hiring America, the syndicated TV program which can be seen nationwide and around the world on the American Forces Network, teamed up with WorkingNation for an important TV event that opens up the dialogue about the problems and solutions for veterans making the transition into civilian life.
The first episode debuted on December 15 and we are proud to share insight from our panelists representing top companies and organizations which have made it their mission to increase veteran job training and hiring. The episode features a one-on-one discussion between moderator Stephanie Sy and former Army Chief of Staff, Gen. George Casey Jr. (Ret.) on why veterans have the skills and leadership experience which can be a valuable resource for businesses looking to fill their open positions.
The episode follows with highlights from our first panel of representatives from the Bush Center Military Service Initiative, IBM, Home Builders Institute and Disabled American Veterans. These experts discuss the problems facing veterans as they try to reconcile their military job experience with the requirements employers ask for on a job application.
Jeff Cleland of the Bush Center Military Service Initiative talked about the importance of matching veterans with a meaningful and sustainable career so they can continue providing for their families. DAV National Employment Director Jeff Hall followed with how his organization provides resources for employers and veterans to facilitate an easier transition into new jobs, especially for those veterans bearing the invisible scars of PTSD.
CEO John Courson of the Home Builders Institute discussed how his company is providing on-the-job training in construction skills at military bases for service members prior to exiting the military. Courson said that providing this training early in this transition period is a key component to its high success rate of job placement for veterans within months of their discharge.
The panel also shared solutions working for veterans in the job search market. IBM Global Business Services VP and Leader of the PS Eminence Academy’s Nicole Gardner debuted a digital application developed in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and powered by IBM’s Watson and Find Your Fit. The interactive app is a chatbot that is connected to government job search board USAJOBS and has a planned expansion to other job search engines. Veterans will be able to use this app as they look for new careers that sync up with their skills and experience.
The second episode of “Keeping America’s Promise” will air in early 2018 on Hiring America and will have more highlights from our panel discussion featuring members of Texas Workforce Commission, 7-Eleven and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
