Jill Houghton on owning your identity in the workplace

Industry leaders discuss business disability inclusion at the 2023 Disability:IN Conference
-

“When you can own your identity in the workplace and be proud, the workplace benefits,” says Jill Houghton, president and CEO, Disability:IN. “It helps to drive more innovation and more inclusion.”

WorkingNation sat down with Houghton at her organization’s gathering – the 2023 Disability:IN Conference in Orlando.

Houghton – who has dyslexia – says, “Ultimately, we know through things like the Accenture report – Getting to Equal: The Disability Inclusion Advantage – when companies are inclusive of people with disabilities, including people with non-apparent disabilities, that they have better bottom lines.”

She says there has been progress in disability inclusion in the workplace, but there is still work to do. “If we look at things like the Disability Equality Index – this year we grew by 17%. We went from 415 companies participating to 485. There are absolutely more companies getting involved and utilizing tools like the Disability Equality Index to measure where they’re at and to map out actions that they can take moving forward.”
