As the workforce development agency in southeastern Virginia, Shawn Avery, president and CEO, Hampton Roads Workforce Council, says there is close collaboration with government.
WorkingNation sat down with Avery at JFF Horizons in New Orleans.
“In the K-12 system, we’re focusing on internships and career exploration opportunities. We’re getting the youth to understand the opportunities that are going to be available in our region so that they want to stay in our region, they want to be part of that workforce,” says Avery.
“We work with our community college system to develop high-demand certifications and the training programs that are needed for our industries.” Avery says with Newport News Shipbuilding in the region, there is a need for electricians, pipe fitters, and ship fitters – in addition to the skilled workforce for the area’s growing offshore wind turbine industry.
